Importance of Renal Volume in the Pre-Operative Assessment of the Renal Function in a Donor: A Study by Multi-Detector Computed Tomography

Dr. Khizer Razak and Dr. G.L.Meena

Aims and Objectives: The objective of the present study was to analyze the correlation between the GFR(glomerular filtration rate)measured by scintigraphy with Cr 51-EDTA and the calculation of RV(renal volume) by means of multidetector CT in the preoperative study of the renal function of the living donor. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed those individuals who were candidates to be living kidney donors, who gave their consent, at the Prince Bijey Singh Memorial hospital, Bikaner, Rajasthan between April 2015 and September 2017. These patients were routinely subjected to a scintigraphy with Cr 51-EDTA , performed to determine the glomerular filtration rate (GFR).All patients underwent abdominal multidetector CT , with administration of intravenous iodinated contrast, for morphological study of the kidneys and their vascularization, including the measurement of RV by volumetry.  Results: 47 individuals were included in the study. The patients were predominantly women (57.4%) with a median age of 47 [39.5-54] years. The subjects presented creatinine figures at the time of the study of 0.72 [0.63-0.82] mg / The GFR determined by scintigraphy with Cr 51-EDTA resulted from 101.2 [90.7-117.9] mL / min, with 99.2 [88.5 - 114.2] mL / min being the GFR corrected by the body surface of the subject. Conclusion: Renal volumetry by means of multidetector CT is a fast, simple and reliable method that can be an alternative to scintigraphy with EDTA-Cr51 to determine the preoperative renal function in patients who are candidates to be living kidney donors.
