Systemic Amyloid A Amyloidosis in a Dog with Sub-acute Time Course after Anesthesia

An 8-year-old female beagle used for investigation of diagnostic imaging rapidly became ill without premonitory symptoms the day after undergoing anesthesia and died about 2 months later. Systemic amyloidosis was found by necropsy, and severe amyloid deposition was observed in the pancreas, kidney and spleen. Immunohistochemically, almost all amyloid depositions comprised amyloid A. Other findings included thrombi in the pulmonary artery and aorta and plasma cell infiltration in multiple organs, including the kidneys. Amyloid A amyloidosis is the most common type of amyloidosis in animals and occurs in association with chronic inflammation and neoplasia. However, the sub-acute course in the present case is rare and suggests an association between anesthesia and thrombi without clear background lesions.
