On Further Understanding of Interaction of Pristine Carbon Nanotubes with Hemoglobin, Serum and H2S

This paper presents a study on the interaction between H2S, pristine carbon nanotube (pCNT), and hemoglobin in the serum solution. A short-term purpose of the study is to develop a CNTbased sensor to simultaneously measure H2S and specific proteins such as hemoglobin in blood. The basic idea of the experiment is to prepare the serum-based solution that contains H2S and hemoglobin, and treat pCNT with the solution. The fluorescence response of the treated pCNT is acquired with confocal laser scanning microscopy (excitation wavelength: 514 nm; emission wavelength: 530-580 nm). The major finding of the study is that the presence of hemoglobin in a H2S and protein solution, such as the serum does not affect the fluorescence response to H2S on pCNT. Together with our previous work, it can be concluded that (1) both hemoglobin and H2S attach with pCNT by treating pCNT with the serum solution that contains hemoglobin and H2S, and (2) fluorescence response of H2S on the treated pCNT is not affected by presence of hemoglobin.
